Common Questions

  1. What should I expect in my first class?

Don’t be nervous for your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. The class participants might seem tight knit, but BJJ practitioners are a friendly bunch. You will soon be one of them. Arrive a few minutes early and introduce yourself to the Coach. The Coach will ensure you are properly introduced and integrated. You will be paired with an appropriate person for partner drills. Ask the club about our Level 0 introductory class where everyone is new, or start with Level 1, where participants will have a range of experience, from beginner and up.

  2. What should I wear? Do I need a gi?

Gi classes require the UFC GYM BJJ gi top and bottom with earned belt level. “No Gi” classes require the rash guard, or top, and the bottoms to be the same color. Newcomer? You’re welcome to attend your first few classes in an alternate gi or appropriate athletic wear. Long sleeves, long pants and tight fitting athletic wear is recommended. Inquire with the coach for more details.

  3. Are there mat rules I need to know?

Mat rules are posted outside of the BJJ room. If you attend a Level 0 introductory class the coach will review rules, but here are a few helpful guidelines to know ahead of time. Always bow to the center of the mat when you enter and exit. Develop respect for yourself and others: class begins with a formal bow to the instructor and your uniform must be kept neat and clean at all times. Observe hygiene best practices. Keep nails short for safety, remove piercings - and NEVER wear shoes on the mat!

  4. Are classes based on weight and size? Are they co-ed?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will empower you with the skills and techniques necessary to overcome any challenger, regardless of size. Try it and find out for yourself! A Level 0 introductory class is available, but beginners are welcome in all classes, except Level 2 + 3. Classes are co-ed unless you choose to attend a Women’s Only class.

  5. What are the belt progressions?

For Adults (ages 16+) the progression is: White Belt (1-4 Stripes), Blue Belt (1-4 Stripes), Purple Belt (1-4 Stripes), Brown Belt (1-4 Stripes), Black Belt (Degrees). For Youth (ages 6-15) the progression is: White Belt (1-4 Stripes), Gray Belt With White Stripe (1-6 Stripes), Gray Belt (1-6 Stripes), Gray Belt With Black Stripe (1-6 Stripes), Yellow Belt With White Stripe (1-6 Stripes), Yellow Belt (1-6 Stripes), Yellow Belt With Black Stripe (1-6 Stripes), Orange Belt With White Stripe (1-6 Stripes), Orange Belt (1-6 Stripes), Orange Belt With Black Stripe (1-6 Stripes), Green Belt With White Stripe (1-6 Stripes), Green Belt (1-6 Stripes), Green Belt With Black Stripe (1-6 Stripes).
